Allan Pason wins the 3rd Cebu Open Chess Standard Tournament 2024

The 3rd Cebu Open Chess Standard Tournament concluded on a riveting note as Allan Pason emerged victorious, securing his win via a superior tiebreak with 46 Buchholz (BH) over Mardonio Fuentes . The 9-round tournament, held at the Gmall Cebu from December 19-22, 2024, attracted participants from various regions, eager to showcase their strategic prowess.

Allan Pason, a well-known contender in the local chess scene, demonstrated exceptional skill and strategic acumen throughout the competition. His performance was marked by a blend of tactical brilliance, calm composure, and relentless focus.

The final day of the tournament was particularly intense. Pason, alongside other top contenders, was under immense pressure, with the championship title hanging in the balance. He played a crucial match against IM Sorensen, Torben, a leader throughout the tournament, where his calculated risks paid off, securing the essential points for a favorable tie. He accumulate an impressive 7.5/9 point together with 2nd placed Mardonio Fuentes.

The atmosphere was fully-airconed inside the mall eagerly watching each move as strategies unfolded on the board. This event not only highlighted the competitive spirit of chess but also fostered a sense of community among players and fans alike. With 80 participants, all vying for the prestigious title.

The 3rd Cebu Open Chess Standard Tournament organized by AGM Mark Mangubat again highlighted Cebu's prominence in nurturing chess talent, with Pason's victory setting a high standard for future competitions. The event wrapped up with the closing ceremony, where Pason was honored, and chess enthusiasts eagerly anticipated the next edition of the tournament.
