Noel Leron won GMG Chess Rapid Tournament via superior tie-break with Marlon Lumberio.

The GMG Chess Rapid Tournament finished with amazing result held on February 17, 2024 at Barangay Hall of Luna-Candol in Gubat, Sorsogon.

Standout moments from the GMG chess tournament involving kids often highlight their talent, sportsmanship, and growth in the game. Here are a few potential examples:

  • 3 kid-participants all aged 5 years old (Ben Rey Operiano & 2 Kindergarten students from Tamban Chess Club Griffin Jay P. Paron & Kadi Jianna I. Borja).
  • Some of players increaed their national ratings and some got national chess ID and tentative ratings.
  • Young participants, playing against seasoned opponents, managed to secure a victory in a critical match, demonstrating surprising strategic skills. Some kids showcased unique opening strategies that surprised their opponents, drawing admiration and curiosity from spectators and coaches.
  • A group of kids formed an impromptu cheer squad for their peers, celebrating each win and providing encouragement, which infused a sense of camaraderie among participants.
  • After a tough match, a young competitor showed maturity by discussing their mistakes with an older player, reflecting a desire to learn and improve.
  • One player consistently demonstrated respect and kindness to opponents, earning a special sportsmanship award, which highlighted the importance of ethical play in chess.
  • An inspiring chess coaches and trainers shared thoughts on how chess has helped them overcome challenges in life, inspiring others in attendance. These moments can encapsulate the passion and dedication of young chess players, making the tournament memorable for everyone involved.

In the end, Leron's speed, tactical skill, dedication and unwavering composure were evident in his gameplay, in the first three-rounds he won against Cena Mae Elem Enteria, Shain Ashley Col Cheng, Merylle Col Abejero, draw with the 4th round with Marlon Lumberio and finishing-off his last 3-rounds with Leo Col Almonte, lawyer Lawrence Earl Roy Gersalia at Danilo Bon. While Marlon Lumberio got same points he lost the top spot with inferior tiebreak with 31.5, a half-point behind with Leron 32.0
